Saving Money On Your Heating Bills
A great way to save heat during the winter months and cut down on fuel costs is by ensuring you have the correct insulation in your attic. With the correct insulation, you can half your heating bill by keeping the heat in your home instead of letting it slip out through your attic.
To start off, determine what rating value is recommended for your home based on your location. You can find this information from an approved roof such as TC Roofers – Roofing Contractors in Dublin, If you aren’t familiar with rating value, it’s basically an insulating material’s resistance to heat flow, measured by its thermal resistance or rating value.
The higher the rating, the more effective an insulating material is. Your home’s rating value score will guide you toward the type of insulation you need.
There are 3 main types of insulation choices available
– Blanket Insulation
– Loose-Fill Insulation
– Sprayed Foam
There are of course other options available but none have the reputation or ability to prevent heat loss the same as the 3 most popular choices. We will take a look at the different options and the benefits of one type vs another.
Blanket Insulation
This type of insulation which you can buy from any reputable manufacturer such as https://www.ballytherm.ie/insulation/ who supply all the local builders in Dublin. Available in square pads or rolls that can be cut to shape. These slot into the gaps between the beams and joist on the roof. Particular handy for dividing walls. Rating value generally is between 3 to 4 on these.
Loose Fill Insulation
Loose fill insulation great for smaller or tighter areas where you can not get into. For example, in the corners of attic or low hanging areas, this can be blown into them corners creating a very sealed and snug area. Not great obviously for partition walling but definitely an excellent choice for an attic floor area. The rating value is between 2 to 3 on this type of insulation.
Spray Form
This type of insulation is generally only installed by professionals who have the equipment and the experience to install it correctly. However, it is vastly superior to normal insulation and it can be added directly to the roof of your attic where it will hold in place preventing the heat from leaving the attic full stop.
Which should you choose?
Well, for any standard attic, we recommend the blown insulation as its fast, covers the entire area and when laid on thickly will 100% prevent significant heat loss. If you really want to cut out any heat loss, we recommend combining this with spray foam. Using both will eliminate any chance of the cold penetrating through the roof and ensure the heat does not evaporate.
Of course the type of insulation you choose for your roof will also depend on the type of roof you have. You can learn more about the types of roofing here or you can call our team to discuss it directly with us.
